Text: Mark 9 vs 33 – 35
Memory verse: Phil. 2 v 14, *“Do all things without murmurings and disputing*
Quarrel means an angry argument or disagreement between people, often about personal matters. Most quarrels that have routed the church, families, fellowship, institutions etc. are based on carnality and lust. See the sharp contention between Barnabas and Paul. Barnabas wanted to take his cousin Mark that dropped at a certain point in the work, but Paul refused and sharp disagreement came in their midst.
In Acts 15, another dispute arise about circumcision, the under tone here is still self and pride. In most cases it leads to division and gives the enemies gap to come in and destroy the things God has built.
In our text today, the disciples of Jesus were quarrelling amongst themselves who should be the greatest. Looking at this instance, you can also notice the same flesh and lust.
Quarrel has never yielded any good thing; please avoid it at all cost. 1John 2 vs 16 – 17 says, *“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”* Stop that quarrel today or else it will lead to unimaginable destruction. It is the devil vices, we must say no to it. Tighten the hedge so that our enemies will labour in vain.
